There are hundreds of small and large seaports throughout India’s coastlines, and the government and private organizations currently manage 13 of the country’s most important ports. The majority of cargoes from outside were transported by water, with major seaports handling 74% of cargo traffic in 2007. Local cargo is in charge of 187 minor and intermediate ports. The largest ports can handle more than 500 million tonnes of cargo each year. Technology and building expansion are usually included in big port upgrades.
